“Let’s Not Start to Cry Now” – Hallgrímsson Backs Ireland to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifying campaign has lurched into crisis after a 2-1 defeat away to Armenia, leaving the Boys in Green bottom of Group F. That result followed a disappointing 2-2 draw with Hungary in Dublin, piling the pressure on Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side ahead of their trip to Portugal on October 11th.

Despite the poor start, Hallgrímsson insists qualification is still within reach:

“Seven points could be enough to take us to the play-offs. We must beat Armenia at home and Hungary away, and if we can take something in Lisbon, then we’re still alive,” said the Icelandic coach.

Reaction Needed Against Portugal

Ireland’s task does not get any tougher – facing Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and company in Lisbon. Bookmakers make Portugal clear favourites at 2/7, while Ireland are 10/1 outsiders. A draw is available at 4/1.

For punters, the safer bet may be Ireland to score over 0.5 goals at 6/5, given the threat of Evan Ferguson and Chiedozie Ogbene on the counter. Ferguson, who netted in Yerevan, is 11/2 to score anytime, while Troy Parrott – if fit – is 7/1.

Must-Win Against Armenia

Whatever happens in Lisbon, the following home fixture against Armenia on October 14th is non-negotiable. Ireland are 4/9 favourites, Armenia are 6/1, and the draw sits at 10/3. Failure to win would effectively end hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup.

Hallgrímsson has recalled experienced heads Séamus Coleman and John Egan, alongside midfield reinforcements Jayson Molumby, Will Smallbone and Festy Ebosele. Injuries to Matt Doherty, Jason Knight and Bosun Lawal have forced changes, but the manager is demanding a response.

“This is an opportunity to restore dignity, pride and confidence in the team. Let’s not start to cry now – we still have a chance,” he said.

Betting Verdict

Ireland’s path to qualification is slim but not impossible. The value may lie in backing Ireland to qualify via play-offs at long odds (currently 14/1), with home advantage against Armenia and a winnable final game in Hungary.

For the Portugal match, a speculative punt on a draw at 4/1 could appeal to optimists, but the smarter play may be Ireland to score and lose at 3/1, reflecting both their struggles and their attacking potential.
