Intense Raffles Becomes Grand National Favourite as Inothewayurthinkin Targets Punchestown

Intense Raffles has surged to the top of the betting markets for the Randox Grand National, following the news that Inothewayurthinkin will instead head to Punchestown for the Ladbrokes Gold Cup.

Last year’s Irish Grand National hero, Intense Raffles is now a 7-1 favourite with William Hill to replicate the achievements of past legends like Bobbyjo, Numbersixvalverde, and most recently, I Am Maximus. All of these champions followed up their victories at Fairyhouse by claiming Grand National glory at Aintree.

The revised Grand National entry list, which was trimmed from 81 to 67 runners after Tuesday’s scratching deadline, places Intense Raffles at number 21. With the race fast approaching, connections are optimistic but remain mindful of the conditions, which could play a crucial role.

Anthony Bromley, racing manager for owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, expressed confidence in Intense Raffles’ preparation, but hinted that softer ground would enhance their horse’s chances. “We’d love to see a bit of rain,” said Bromley. “Aintree usually manages to keep it on the softer side of good, and Intense Raffles thrives on soft ground.”

Currently slated to carry 10st10lb, Intense Raffles will enter the Grand National on the back of a solid performance in the Bobbyjo Chase. Bromley remarked that the horse would likely have received a 6lb higher mark if reassessed, further solidifying their strong position heading into the Aintree showpiece.

Key Absentees from the Revised Grand National Lineup

Despite Intense Raffles’ rise in the betting markets, there have been several notable withdrawals. Inothewayurthinkin, who had been the 3-1 favourite for the Grand National, will instead focus on Punchestown. Other high-profile scratches include Gentlemansgame, Monty’s Star, The Real Whacker, and last year’s favourite Limerick Lace.

Among those still in the race, Royale Pagaille, who finished sixth in last Friday’s Gold Cup, remains a contender, while Vanillier, last year’s runner-up, now looks almost guaranteed to secure a spot in the final 34-runner lineup.

As the countdown to Aintree continues, many horses are battling for a place in the prestigious race, with Meetingofthewaters currently sitting at number 32, and five of Paul Nicholls’ horses comfortably inside the cut-off.

Excitement Builds for Aintree

With Intense Raffles leading the charge, excitement is building as punters keep a close eye on the odds. Will this year’s Irish National hero join the illustrious ranks of those who have triumphed at both Fairyhouse and Aintree? Time will tell as race day draws nearer.
