Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson has named a stronger, more experienced squad for October’s World Cup qualifiers, with Séamus Coleman and John Egan both returning to the fold.
The veteran duo, who have captained Ireland in the past, were absent from the September internationals but are recalled as the Boys in Green prepare for two crucial fixtures – away to Portugal on October 11th in Lisbon and at home to Armenia on October 14th at the Aviva Stadium.
Key Squad Updates
Midfielder Jayson Molumby also returns, while Will Smallbone, Callum O’Dowda, and Festy Ebosele are back after missing last month. Injuries rule out Matt Doherty, Bosun Lawal and Jason Knight, while Robbie Brady remains sidelined with a calf problem.
Troy Parrott, despite a recent knee issue, has been included with the hope he can feature for AZ Alkmaar this weekend before linking up with the squad.
Ireland’s attacking options look promising, with Evan Ferguson (AS Roma), Adam Idah (Swansea), and Chiedozie Ogbene (Sheffield United) among the forward line.
Betting Odds – Portugal vs Ireland
It’s a tough assignment first up in Lisbon. Bookmakers make Portugal strong favourites at 2/7, while Ireland are big outsiders at 10/1. A draw is priced at 4/1.
For punters looking for value, Evan Ferguson is 11/2 to score anytime, while Troy Parrott is 7/1 should he recover in time. Backing Ireland to score over 0.5 goals at 6/5 could be the safest bet, given the attacking depth Hallgrímsson has called upon.
Must-Win Clash in Dublin
The home tie against Armenia looks far more favourable. Ireland are 4/9 favourites, Armenia are 6/1, with the draw available at 10/3. Anything less than three points would be considered a major setback in Ireland’s qualification bid.
With the blend of returning leaders and young talent, these October fixtures will be a clear indicator of whether Ireland can realistically push for a World Cup place.
