Round 4 of the Nations Championship is the first northern-hemisphere leg, and every tie is North v South. The Europe group is England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales; the Rest of the World group is New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Fiji and Japan. By our count the July tour finished level at nine wins each, and the market has the North ahead 4–2 this weekend. As with most big rugby weekends, the bookies are better at picking winners than margins – and that’s where we’re looking.
Ireland v Argentina odds and best bet
Friday 6 November · Aviva Stadium · 8.10pm · referee Luke Pearce · sold out
Ireland have won 16 and lost 8 of their 25 meetings with Argentina, with one draw, according to the Nations Championship site. Andy Farrell has made seven changes from the side beaten in Auckland in July. Porter, Baird and Hansen return after almost a year out, Casey starts at scrum-half over Gibson-Park, Timoney is preferred to van der Flier, and Sean Jansen makes his first Test start with Conan and Doris injured. Sam Prendergast is fit to start at out-half, and Henshaw is in with Ringrose out.
Argentina have named a strong side with 12 changes from their draw with Australia. Ireland’s July wins came by two points against Australia (33-31) and 16 against Japan (36-20), and their discipline in last November’s loss to South Africa – one red card and four yellows – is a reminder of how quickly margins can move. That’s why we like the handicap cushion. The total is 50.5 points, with the over at 4/6 and the under at 11/10.
| Market | Ireland | Draw | Argentina |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match result | 1/3 | 25/1 | 12/5 |
| Handicap 7.5 | Ireland -7.5 · 8/11 | – | Argentina +7.5 · 1/1 |
| Handicap 8.5 (main) | Ireland -8.5 · 10/11 | – | Argentina +8.5 · 10/11 |
| Handicap 9.5 | Ireland -9.5 · evens | – | Argentina +9.5 · 8/11 |
| Total match points | Over 50.5 · 4/6 | – | Under 50.5 · 11/10 |
| Ireland team tries | Over 4.5 · 11/10 | – | Under 4.5 · 4/6 |
Try scorers: Hansen is the one to watch
Mack Hansen is back in the Ireland team after foot surgery and a long spell out, and at 5/4 anytime he’s a bigger price than Sheehan and Baloucoune, who are both 20/21. Argentina’s wings Carreras and Delguy are 7/4 anytime, which is the price of a team expected to chase the game.
| Player | Anytime | First |
|---|---|---|
| Dan Sheehan (Ireland) | 20/21 | 9/1 |
| Rob Baloucoune (Ireland) | 20/21 | 9/1 |
| Mack Hansen (Ireland) | 5/4 | 11/1 |
| Mateo Carreras (Argentina) | 7/4 | 16/1 |
| Bautista Delguy (Argentina) | 7/4 | 16/1 |
The rest of the North v South weekend
Five more ties. Tap a game for the preview.
Italy v South AfricaSaturday 11.40am · Allianz Stadium, TurinMarket: South Africa 1/100
South Africa arrived with three wins from three in July and lead the head-to-head 18–1, according to the official Nations Championship site. Italy lost all three of their July games.
South Africa are 1/100 to win, Italy 16/1 and the draw 50/1. The handicap is 28.5 either way at 10/11. A price like 1/100 isn’t worth much on its own, so we’re passing on this one.
Scotland v New ZealandSaturday 2.10pm · MurrayfieldTreble leg: Scotland +9.5 10/11
Scotland have never beaten New Zealand and have drawn twice, but the last two meetings have both been close: 17-25 last November and 23-31 in 2022, each an eight-point loss. They scored 47 against Argentina in July, and New Zealand won all three of their July games.
The All Blacks are 2/7, Scotland 5/2 and the draw 25/1. Scotland +9.5 at 10/11 gives a cushion that recent meetings suggest they can use.
Wales v JapanSaturday 4.40pm · Principality StadiumMarket: Wales -15.5 10/11
Wales lead the head-to-head 15–2 and are 1/8, with Japan 5/1 and the draw 33/1. Both sides have the same form line in the competition (W L L), and Japan lost 36-20 to Ireland in July.
The handicap is Wales -15.5 at 10/11 with Japan +15.5 the same price. A big line between two sides in similar form is one to watch for team news.
France v FijiSaturday 8.10pm · OL Stadium, LyonMarket: France 1/50
France are 1/50, Fiji 12/1 and the draw 50/1. France have won their last two Nations Championship games, while Fiji lost all three in July. France lead the head-to-head 12–1.
With the handicap at France -24.5 (10/11), the question is margin rather than winner. We’re leaving it alone.
England v AustraliaSunday 3.10pm · TwickenhamTreble leg: Australia +8.5 10/11
England recovered from a July opening defeat to win their next two, and lead the head-to-head 22–13 on the official site. Australia won the last of their July games and scored 31 against Ireland in Sydney.
England are 3/10, Australia 12/5 and the draw 25/1. The handicap is England -8.5 at 10/11, with Australia +8.5 the same price. We think +8.5 is the better side of it.

Our four best bets
18+. #AD. Bets 1–3 make up our treble. Bet 4 is a separate single. Prices subject to change. T&Cs apply. Please gamble responsibly.
The market makes the North 4–2 favourites for the weekend, and the favourites are probably right about who wins. Where it’s harder to price is by how much, which is why three of our four bets are handicaps and all three back the underdog’s cushion.
This is an opinion, not betting advice. Team news can move prices, so check the latest odds before you bet.

Four things to check before betting on Test rugby
- 01Team newsSquads can change late, and one injury to a key player can move a price by points.
- 02How the bet settlesPrices here are for the 80 minutes. Read the market rules before you place a bet.
- 03Handicap linesHalf-point lines can’t be a push. The line you back decides what the underdog needs.
- 04Your stakeA treble needs three results to go your way. Keep stakes small and set a limit.
